Rituximab for Immune Thrombocytopenia: A Retrospective Analysis on the Role of Prophylaxis Against Pneumocystis Jirovecii and Herpes Zoster Virus

2018

Abstract Introduction and objective of the study Rituximab (RTX) is considered a valid second line treatment option for persistent or chronic Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP). RTX is known to affect the immune system thus increasing the risk for viral and fungal infections. Although prophylactic treatment to prevent Pneumocystis jirovecii (PJ) and herpes viruses' infections is used in patients with haematological neoplasms receiving RTX, these evidence is lacking in ITP patients candidated to anti-CD20 therapy. We here reported the role of phrophylaxis in a cohort of patients treated with RTX for refractory/relapsed ITP. Methods Data from patients affected by ITP and treated at our Institution…

Novel inflammatory biomarkers may reflect subclinical inflammation in young healthy adults with obesity

2019

The Impact of the Progressive Efficiency Test on a Rowing Ergometer on White Blood Cells Distribution and Clinical Chemistry Changes in Paralympic Ro…

2017

Abstract There is a large gap in knowledge regarding research on post-exercise blood changes in disabled athletes. There are relatively few data on adaptive mechanisms to exercise in disabled athletes, including disabled rowers. Two rowers from a Polish adaptive rowing settle TAMix2x that qualified for the Paralympic Games in Rio, 2016 took part in this study. They performed a progressive test on a rowing ergometer until exhaustion. The cardiorespiratory fitness measures, complete blood count, white blood cells’ distribution and 30 clinical chemistry variables describing laboratory diagnostic profiles and general health were determined. The extreme effort induced changes in all studied meta…

COVID-19 disease - Temporal analyses of complete blood count parameters over course of illness, and relationship to patient demographics and manageme…

2020

Background Detailed temporal analyses of complete (full) blood count (CBC) parameters, their evolution and relationship to patient age, gender, co-morbidities and management outcomes in survivors and non-survivors with COVID-19 disease, could identify prognostic clinical biomarkers. Methods From 29 January 2020 until 28 March 2020, we performed a longitudinal cohort study of COVID-19 inpatients at the Italian National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Rome, Italy. 9 CBC parameters were studied as continuous variables [neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets, mean platelet volume, red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, mean red blood cell volume and red blood cell distribu…

Monocyte distribution width (MDW) as a screening tool for sepsis in the Emergency Department

2020

Abstract Objectives The diagnosis of sepsis in the Emergency Department (ED) is challenging and a reliable biomarker is needed. The current study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of monocyte distribution width (MDW) for the early identification of sepsis in the ED. Methods We performed a large observational study including consecutive adult patients (≥18 years of age) presenting to the ED between September and November 2019, with an order for complete blood count (CBC) evaluation. A total of 2,215 patients were enrolled and classified based on Sepsis-2 criteria as the control group (1,855), infection group (172), Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) group (100), and sepsi…

The Value of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) for Sepsis Diagnosis and Prognosis.

2021

Sepsis represents an important global health burden due to its high mortality and morbidity. The rapid detection of sepsis is crucial in order to prevent adverse outcomes and reduce mortality. However, the diagnosis of sepsis is still challenging and many efforts have been made to identify reliable biomarkers. Unfortunately, many investigated biomarkers have several limitations that do not support their introduction in clinical practice, such as moderate diagnostic and prognostic accuracy, long turn-around time, and high-costs. Complete blood count represents instead a precious test that provides a wealth of information on individual health status. It can guide clinicians to early-identify …

Pilot study of safety and efficacy of polyprenols in combination with coenzyme Q10 in patients with statin-induced myopathy

2016

Background and objective: Statin-induced myopathy (SIM) has been partially attributed to deficiency of dolichol and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). We aimed to test the safety and efficacy of plant polyprenols in combination with CoQ10 for alleviation of SIM. Materials and methods: In an open-label, one-center prospective pilot study patients with SIM received conifer-tree needle polyprenols (4 mg/day) and CoQ10 (100 mg/day) for 8 weeks. Symptoms and safety were evaluated according to symptom severity score (0–10), creatine kinase (CK) levels, exercise test, dynamometry, complete blood count, clinical biochemistry and electrocardiography. Results: Of the 14 patients, 11 completed the study per protoc…

Specialized Movement on the Rowing Ergometer and Post-workout Changes in Selected Peripheral Blood Parameters - a Case Report.

2018

Rowing is a sport discipline, which requires extreme physical strength and endurance and appropriate aerobic and anaerobic capacity as well. However, when the workout intensity and load is very high, exercise is associated with temporary changes in cellular metabolism and the immune system. The study included one male rower aged 28 years - the highly-skilled and experienced athlete. We determined basic cardiorespiratory fitness measures, complete blood count, and 24 clinical chemistry parameters including relevant biochemical and haematological parameters and matrix metaloproteinases activities. Maximal exercise on the rowing ergometer induced 2-fold increase in absolute counts of all leuko…

2021

Background Malignant melanoma is an immunogenic skin cancer with an increasing global incidence. Advanced stages of melanoma have poor prognoses. Currently, there are no reliable parameters to predict a patient's response to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy. Methods This study highlights the relevance of a distinct immune signature in the blood for response to ICI therapy and overall survival (OS). Therefore, the immune cell composition in the peripheral blood of 45 melanoma patients prior to ICI therapy was analyzed by flow cytometry and complete blood count. Results Responders to ICI therapy displayed an abundance of proliferating CD4+ T cells, an increased lymphocyte-to-monocyte…

Outcome of patients with CML treated with dasatinib or nilotinib after failure of second prior TKIs.

2010

Abstract Abstract 2294 Background. The TKIs Nilotinib and Dasatinib offer additional therapeutic options for patients with CML who are resistant or intolerant to Imatinib. These agents, active against the majority of Imatinib resistant BCR-ABL mutated clones, have a different pattern of kinase target selectivity, pharmacokinetics parameters, cell uptake, efflux properties and adverse events profiles. Preliminary results suggest that some patients may respond to a second TKI used as third line therapy, but little is known about the long term benefit of such an approach.Aim of this collaborative Italian study was to verify the response (rate and duration) and the clinical outcome in patients …
